Soriano nel Cimino

Soriano nel Cimino is a splendid village that is distinguished by the contrast between its medieval historic center, dominated by the imposing Orsini Castle, and the elegant Renaissance structures that develop around it.

The massive bulk of the castle stands proud above the village with its grim and austere appearance, a reminder of a past of power and battles. Originally built in the 13th century, the castle was later adapted as a prison, maintaining an exterior structure in excellent condition.

The historic center of Soriano gathers around the top of the hill where the castle is built, with houses arranged around it in concentric circles. In the Renaissance part, the Albani-Chigi Palace stands out, with the famous Papacqua Fountain next to it, a fascinating set of marble sculptures that tell mythological stories through masks and groups of figures carved in the rock.

Not to be missed around the town are the hamlet of Chia, famous for the medieval tower that once belonged to Pier Paolo Pasolini, and the Monte Cimino beech forest, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017. With its gigantic centuries-old trees of 50 meters and more, this enchanted beech forest offers a nature immersion experience perfect for hiking, horseback riding, or mountain biking enthusiasts.

For those looking for breathtaking views, Big Bench 331, located in the beech forest, offers 360-degree views of the village, castle, and surrounding hills, and can be reached by a short walk from Le Vedutelle Park.

Food and wine specialties include gnocchi col ferro, a traditional pasta made with a large stocking iron, spaghetti with ricotta cheese, and dishes made with chestnuts, queens of autumn cuisine. Soriano celebrates the chestnut with a festival involving the entire town with an epic historical re-enactment event. Other evocative events are also held throughout the year, such as the Procession of the Dead Christ, which takes place on Good Friday.
