Located on a rise overlooking the Tiber valley, Carbognano is a charming village that enchants visitors with its historical heritage and the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. It is distinguished by its quaint corners and welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal place for slow tourism, away from the most crowded routes.
The village is dominated by the imposing Farnese Castle, the historic residence of Giulia 'la Bella,' which gives Carbognano a special charm. Built on an earlier medieval fortress, the castle does not dominate the village from an elevated position like other fortresses built by the Farnese family, but rather represents the hub around which the entire village developed. Although it cannot be visited internally, its quadrangular structure and majestic keep adorned with battlements and corbels tell stories of a past rich in nobility and culture.
Other points of interest are the Fontana di Piazza at the foot of the castle, adorned with the coat of arms of Carbognano and pouring water from three spouts, the central one of which has a lion's head, and the 17th-century washhouse.
Gavinelle, a traditional first course similar to fettuccine, prepared with water and flour and seasoned with amatriciana sauce, is one of the most renowned gastronomic specialties. In fact, every year in June, the festival of the same name is celebrated, an event that attracts many visitors eager to taste local dishes.
Among the most significant events is also the Corpus Christi Infiorata, which takes place between May and June, when the streets of the town are colored in a thousand shades thanks to the floral and liturgical motifs that are reproduced on the ground along the procession route. While flower petals were once used, in recent years these have been gradually replaced by colored sawdust and flour, which the painstaking work of local volunteers transform into extraordinary works of art.
Thanks to its location, Carbognano also offers wonderful opportunities for hiking and trekking among centuries-old forests and lush hazel groves, ideal for those who love to immerse themselves in nature and discover the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
