Capranica is a small hill town along the Via Francigena, situated on a tuff cliff on the Via Cassia, surrounded by verdant areas rich in turkey oaks, beech, chestnut, hazelnut and vines.
Two ancient gates give access to the historic center, where there is an atmospheric atmosphere.
The town's rich religious architecture spans the course of a millennium, from the 9th-century Church of St. Peter to the 19th-century Church of Santa Maria. A must-see is the Anguillara Castle flanked by the Clock Tower, and the Church of the Madonna del Piano just outside the historic center, whose carved wooden ceiling will leave you speechless.
In the 1950s Capranica became famous for the production of Chinotto Neri, as an alternative to the American Coca Cola, which used as its base the mineral water of San Rocco, which still flows into the nearby valley from the spring adjacent to the rural church of the same name.
In fact, many excellent oligomineral, thermal, healing and pure spring waters come from this area and are used by the inhabitants, who almost jealously guard their names and properties.
Worth tasting are the excellent local dishes, such as spelt polenta with truffles, sweets with hazelnuts, Tuscia DOP extra virgin olive oil and some Colli Cimini IGT wines.
Local food and wine is celebrated at many events throughout the year, such as the Wine Tour in July, the Hunter's Festival, and the Gnocchi and Strozzapreti Festival in August. Other events not to be missed are the Focarone di Sant'Antonio in January, and nighttime guided tours of the historic center with Svicolando.
