Lying along the historic Via Cassia, Vetralla enjoys a strategic location, nestled between the centuries-old forests of the Cimini Mountains, the green lung of Tuscia, and expanses of pastureland stretching westward, a land that preserves deep traces of ancient Etruscan settlements.
This medieval village, with its picturesque corners and noble palaces, is an ideal place for those looking for a destination immersed in tranquility, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
One of the town's most iconic monuments is the 13th-century Church of St. Francis, with its marvelous floors and frescoes and striking crypt.
Not far from the village, the Etruscan necropolis of Norchia, which features rock-cut tombs, is a must-see for fans of archaeology and ancient history.
Prominent among local traditions is the Marriage of the Tree, a very ancient festival celebrated on May 8 in the woods of Mount Fogliano. According to a rite established for at least five centuries, two trees (an ancient turkey oak and a young oak) are dressed as newlyweds, including a veil, and surrounded by garlands and sylvan flowers. Accompanied by a ceremony full of colors, flag-waving and historical costumes, the mayor of Vetralla sanctions the marriage between the two trees to reaffirm the right of ownership of the people of Vetralla over the Monte Fogliano forest, without which the right would pass to the municipality of Viterbo, which claimed ownership.
Vetralla is also famous for its typical products: in September there is the Sagra del Fungo Porcino, a celebration of the prized mushroom that grows abundantly in the local woods, while in November the Festa dell'Olio allows people to taste the excellent extra virgin olive oil produced in the area.
The surrounding area offers numerous opportunities for nature lovers and hikers, with trails through the forests of Monte Fogliano ideal for rejuvenating walks in an unspoiled environment.
