Sutri is an ancient village, a stop on the Via Francigena, rich in history and art, whose charm has been awarded as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy.
A walk through the charming old town allows visitors to admire wonderful alleys and tuff houses, and the delightful old wash house. Not to be missed is the Palazzo Doebbing Museum, which houses top-notch exhibits featuring works by world-renowned masters, and is a must-see. But the real beating heart of this small community is the Town Hall Square, topped by the Clock Tower.
Another gem of Sutri is the Archaeological Park, adjacent to the historic center, in which it is possible to visit the Etruscan necropolis. Inside the park is the Roman Amphitheater, a structure built 2,000 years ago and entirely excavated in the tuff without any masonry support, which accommodated up to 7,000 visitors. In the summer, this striking location is the backdrop for theater, music and dance performances.
The most magical place in the park is undoubtedly the Mitreo or Church of the Madonna del Parto. This enchanted place, carved into a tufa cliff and decorated with splendid ancient frescoes, began as an Etruscan burial ground, later became a place dedicated to the worship of the mysteries of Mithras and finally a Christian church.
The icing on the cake to end a visit to the Archaeological Park is a walk to Villa Savorelli and its labyrinth hedge garden. From here there are breathtaking views of the village and surrounding countryside.
The village of Sutri is also rich in small workshops and craft activities and modern stores capable of satisfying all tastes and needs.
Sutri's peasant tradition remains alive in its gastronomic specialties, the local excellence of which is the bean, to which a Festival is also dedicated in September, where it is served in characteristic earthenware bowls. Local delicacies include fagioli della regina, ditalini alla militare and tozzetti alla nocciola.
