A small village on the border with Tuscany, Proceno is the northern gateway to Tuscia. A cozy but surprising village, it sits on a tuff hill and overlooks a valley that offers spectacular views of woods, fields and hills.
The historic center preserves the layout of the ancient settlement surrounded by Etruscan walls, and holds an intimate and authentic atmosphere. In the heart of the village stands the Rocca di Proceno, with its drawbridge still in working order: a medieval castle that now houses a albergo diffuso and cultural events. Further down in the center of the village is Palazzo Sforza, home of the Museum of Peasant Civilization: an elegant Renaissance building that dominates the square and is part of the network of Historic Houses of Lazio.
Proceno is the first Lazio stage of the Via Francigena on the way to Rome. Pilgrims can choose between two routes: a valley route, which is easier, and a mountain route, which is more challenging but scenic and very impressive.
The surrounding area offers numerous opportunities for nature walks and hikes, such as the trails that run along the Stridolone Creek, among springs, forests, and rich biodiversity-ideal for those who like to explore unhurriedly.
Curiosities include the hamlet of Centeno, where Galileo Galilei apparently stayed in 1625, heading to Rome for his trial with the Holy Office.
On the gastronomic front, the red garlic of Proceno stands out, fragrant, spicy and able to keep for a long time: the basis of many local dishes, it is the protagonist of a summer festival that enlivens the village with tastings, music and traditions. The renowned Alto Viterbese IGP potatoes, rich in vitamin C and potassium thanks to the volcanic soil, are also grown here.
Proceno is a quiet and secluded corner of Tuscia, perfect for those seeking nature, authenticity and a beauty that reveals itself slowly.
