Grotte di Castro is a charming medieval village perched on a tuffaceous spur of the Volsini Mountains, from which there are spectacular views of Lake Bolsena and the surrounding countryside. The historic center unfolds along a scenic path from the promontory overlooking the lake, leading to the Basilica of Maria SS. del Suffragio, the Church of St. Peter the Apostle and the Civita Archaeological Museum.
The town is known for its Etruscan necropolis, including those of Pianezze and Centocamere, a complex of tombs connected by tunnels and chambers carved into the rock, which testify to the advanced engineering of the Etruscans. The surroundings offer numerous opportunities for hiking and outdoor activities, with walks in the woods of the Volsini Mountains and water sports such as swimming, sailing and fishing.
At the table, the IGP potatoes of Alto Viterbese, celebrated every August in the Potato Festival, stand out, accompanied by olive oil, cheeses, cured meats and the famous Aleatico wine.
For those seeking an authentic experience of history, archaeology, nature, hiking and tradition, Grotte di Castro is a must-see destination in northern Lazio, on the border with Tuscany and Umbria.
